Appalachian State University brings roughly 20,000 students to the Boone area each academic year. This influx affects the type and volume of cases filed in Watauga County. Many of these cases involve individuals who are not permanent residents but who are listed with Boone addresses during their time at the university. When running a background check, keep in mind that a person's Watauga County record may only reflect their time as a student. Their permanent home county could hold additional records. Pairing a Watauga County search with the SBI statewide check helps account for this transient population.

Note: The presence of Appalachian State University means the court system in Watauga County handles cases involving a mix of permanent residents and students.

Statewide Criminal Records Search

For a search that covers all of North Carolina, the NC State Bureau of Investigation is the resource to use. The SBI has operated from Raleigh since 1937. It maintains the Computerized Criminal History file, known as CCH, which pulls data from law enforcement agencies statewide.

A name-based search is the faster option. A fingerprint-based search is more accurate. The SBI uses SAFIS, the Statewide Automated Fingerprint Identification System, to match fingerprints against records on file. The NC Courts background check page explains both methods.

Chapter 114 of the NC General Statutes governs the collection and sharing of criminal history data in North Carolina.

Watauga County's mountain location along the Blue Ridge also places it near the Tennessee border. Residents of the western part of the county may have connections to Johnson County, Tennessee or other border communities. A North Carolina SBI search will not include any Tennessee records. If you need a complete background check on someone with ties to both states, a separate inquiry through the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation would be necessary. The Watauga County clerk's office can only provide records from cases filed within North Carolina's court system.
